As the the end of 2015 gets closer, I have been reflecting on the past. I have been reading some of my old journals and laughing at my younger self. One of the things that has really gotten to me is how long I put off starting my business. I set the goal of starting my own business in 2012. I was so excited and full of hope for my future.
The kicker is that I didn’t start by business until 2015!
That’s a whole 3 years later! Why did I put off starting my on business and living life on my terms?
The answer is: I was stuck in research mode.
I was stuck researching everything from how to create a website, to how to use social media, to content marketing, to copywriting. I downloaded every freebie, blog post, and ebook I could. There was so much information out there that I was overwhelmed.
Even though I had done all this research, I didn’t know where to start.
So I put it off and put it off and wasted three years working for someone else. I wasted three years not building the life I wanted. I wasted three years watching others build their businesses. I wasted three years jealous of their success.
I don’t want you to waste any more time watching other creatives build their businesses. It’s time to get unstuck, get focused, and launch your business the right way.

Get super specific on your dream customer
Who are you trying to help with your business? What are her struggles and pain points? At what stage is she in her life and business? The better you know your dream customer, the easier it is going to be for us to create messaging and content specific for them. We’ll know what kind of blog posts to write, what kind of packages to offer, and which social media platforms to use.
Define your offerings and document your process.
What kind of packages will you offer? How will you get your dream clients from Point A to Point B? Your offerings tell potential clients how to hire you. They spell out the benefits of hiring you; especially how your creative expertise can make a tangible difference in their lives or businesses.
Establish your creative expertise
Having a blog is not mandatory; but you have to have a platform to share your gifts of knowledge. If a blog is not your style, maybe a podcast or videos will work for you. Sharing your knowledge helps your dream customers connect with you and get to know, like, and trust you. It helps them whip out their credit cards and hire you.
Cultivate relationships through an email list
An email list is a must. You’ve heard it (or will hear it) a million times: The money’s in the list. Email helps you build a relationship with your dream customer. It helps them get to know you, your personality, and your expertise. One you build that relationship, it is way more likely for that person to become a customer (and then a repeat customer).
Share your personal brand online
People buy from people they know, like and trust so you have to put yourself out there and share how awesome you are. We all know that having social media accounts is a must for every business. It’s the best way for you to share what you and your business is all about and connect with your dream customers.
Set up your website
If you want to succeed online, you have to have a website. With Bluehost and WordPress, it’s super easy to get a domain, hosting, and an awesome theme without breaking the bank.
