This post is Part 1 in a 7-part series called “Building Your Brand for Creatives.”
When most people think about building their brands, they immediately think “I need a super cool logo.” But building a cohesive brand is so much more than that. So much more.
Before you even go down the Pinterest rabbit hole looking at logos and choosing your colors, you need to take a step back and figure out why you are even starting your business in the first place.
Knowing this Epic Why will help you so much in your biz. It will help you stay focused and motivated when the money isn’t coming in as fast as you want it to. It will light a fire under you to turn off Netflix, make a cup of coffee (or a pot of coffee if you’ve been binging on Gilmore Girls and are BFFs with Lorelei) and get to work.
So what if you don’t your Epic Why nailed down yet? Don’t worry, it’s okay. Here are some ways to figure out what makes you tick.
How do you want to feel?
I recently read the Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte. It was awesome. I highly highly recommend it. Danielle teaches that we should think about how we want to feel and calls these feelings our Core Desired Feelings. These Core Desired Feelings become your why. They become the thing that drives you. Everything you do is because you want to feel a certain way and every goal you set brings you closer to those feelings.
Thinking about how I want to feel and reminding myself of it every day has really helped me focus. And stay off of Facebook. So how do you want to feel? Pick three or four feelings and write down the definitions. It can be your definition or one from Dictionary.com. Now everything you do and every goal you set will be to make you feel those feelings.
What do you want to be known for?
This is a great one. When you’re an old, sassy granny, (and I can’t wait to be an old sassy granny) what do you want to tell your grandkids? What do you want to have accomplished? If you don’t want to think that far ahead,(I know 30-40 years from now is a really long time) what do you want to be known for right now? Do you want to be Self-Love guru like Gala Darling or a spirituality expert like Gabrielle Bernstein? What do you want to be know for right now?
What impact do you want to have for your customers?
Again, it’s not always all about you. Think about your customers. How do you want to make their lives better, easier, happier? How do you want to change their worlds? What do you want to do for them? Now you may have to do some deep thinking on this one. I’m not talking about your offerings. If you are a Boudoir photographer, think past your initial deliverable of taking tasteful, sultry photos for brides-to-be. Your why could be helping brides feel more comfortable in their own skin and celebrate their sexiness not matter what size they are because all women are beautiful in their own way. This is way deeper and its something that will motivate you to keep at it.
